Welcome to the Ordnance Survey Golf Club's review for 2015. 2015 was again a good year for the club. Ordnance Survey enjoyed a full programme of outing. There were no new venues this year on the itinerary but a mixture of courses which we have played before. This year the captain was led by the extremely likeable and enthusiastic Lee Gladwin Stride. The season kicked off with the Captains scramble shield held at Leckford in the middle of April. Again the turnout was very good with 35 persons attending. The event was won with a Net 58.5 by the team of Andy Evans, Mark Hunt, Duncan Munro and Paul Harris. Our next venue began in late April with members venturing north to Dummer. A golf course near Junction 7 of the M3. Captain Gladwin Stride drove in as is the custom. The outing was reduced to 27 holes with a 9 hole non trophy scramble as the am competition and the 18 hole main event in the afternoon. With the greens very difficult and fast on a very pleasant day the team of Andy Evans, Mark Hunt, Cliff Garvey and Rob Knowlton with a score of -2 took the am Scramble competition. In the afternoon the main business took centre stage. Andy Evans continued with his good form by winning the London Road Shield with a gross 79 with the ever green Don Davies 2nd and a new comer Stephen Hutton 3rd. In the net Competition Don Davies won the Chessington Cup with a net 67 with Andy Evans 2nd and Keith Davies 3rd. The next event on the calendar at the end of May was the club championship held at the Southampton city golf course. This year the competition was held over 18 holes. Again with Bob Bailey not in the field it was left to the lowest handicaps in the field to fight it out. The 2 contestants did not disappoint. It was very close result with Stephen Hutton with a Gross 77 edging out on Count back Darren Bailey with Andy Evans third. Simon Bevan secured the TM Baker Trophy with a net 68 with Dave Long 2nd and Andy Evans 3rd. In June the OS travelled south to Crookhorn Golf Club overlooking Portsmouth where the Topo Trophy was the trophy on offer. This course was lasted visited in 1996. The OS members found the course difficult but on this occasion Darren Bailey triumphed with 36 pts, with Cliff Garvey 2nd and Chris Dunn 3rd. The July venue in 2015 for the Roger Martin Memorial Cup was Dibden Golf Course. This was a regular venue for the Autumn Flag but the first time it had been used to host an outing. The winner on this occasion was Alan Bush with an excellent 42 points with Don Davies 2nd and Darren Bailey 3rd. The August outing and the highlight of the year as far as the captain is concerned was Captains Day held this year at Salisbury and South West Golf Club. This was last played by Ordnance Survey in 2007 under Captain Geoff Dear. On the day the weather was kind as everybody thought it would rain all day. The Captains Prize was played over 36 holes with 2 stableford rounds. The winner of the Captain prize with 40 and 41 points for a grand total of 81 points was Andy Evans with Mike Bennett second with 72 points and Simon Bevan third also with 72 points. The last event of the year is the Autumn Flag and for those over 55 the Veterans cup. This year we returned to an old venue for this competition which was Romsey Golf Club, last played in 1980. This year the winner was Kris Drudge who finished in the 18th Hole. Paul Taylor came second finishing on the 18th Green with Pete Williams 3rd. Pete Williams also won the Veteran’s Cup with a net 70 with Mike Bennett and Cliff Garvey 2nd and 3rd respectively. The Match Play events ran throughout the year as usual although this year the Sumner cup (Greensome) was not played for. The Bentley Cup (winter knock out) was won by Don Hobbs who beat Andy Evans in the final at Paultons 3 and 1. In the Bob Sevage Trophy, Don Hobbs and Chris Dunn beat Mike Bennett and Lee Gladwin-Stride in the final 2 and 1. The final was started at Romsey Golf Club but was abandoned due to darkness. The final was rearranged and was continued at Chilworth where the final was won on the 17th Green. It was the 9th time Don and Chris had won the Bob Sevage Trophy. In the Match Play Cup, Tony Gray swept all the opponent’s aside and beat Robbie Rothwell in the final to win the cup for a second time. The social matches this year were organised by the vice-Captain Bob Bailey. The season opener was against QinetiQ. Held In May the OS team won 3-1. In the Survey Cup against Southampton Golf Club, in August, Ordnance Survey lost the match 3-1. In late August the Survey took on the Southampton Golf Club in the Bowdrey Cup. With the MOGS withdrawing this was a straight competition between us and Southampton. Unfortunately the Survey was overwhelmed on the day and lost 6.5 to 1.5. The only players who managed to win any points was Avtar Bahra with a win and Chris Dunn with a half. In other social matches this year, Darren Bailey won the 11th Past Captains Cup at Leckford. There was a draw 2-2 by the in house/associates team over the retired. The retired retained the Diamond Jubilee Cup. The Captain verses Vice Captain match was win 3-2 for the Vice Captain over the Captain. Other winners to mention in 2015, Andy Evans won the Chairman’s Cleek with 209pts for the best 3 scores from the 4 outings. Andy won the trophy on count back from Don Davies. Chris Dunn won the 72 hole competition with a net score of -6 and also the Eclectic with an score of -10. Andy Evans won the Christmas Competition while Kris Drudge won the Easter Competition. Through the summer from April to September Ordnance Survey ran monthly medals open to all members. These could be played on any course. The winners were as follows. In April Kris Drudge carded a net 69. In May Mike Purvis came out on top with a net 63 at Bramshaw. In June Chris Dunn scored a net 64 at Chilworth. In July Chris Dunn scored a 65 at Chilworth and in August Chris Dunn carded 66 and lastly in September Chris Dunn came out on top with a net 68. The 2015 handicap Order of Merit consist of 20 events throughout the year. This comprises of the outings, knock-out competitions, eclectic, the stroke play cup and monthly medals. Although all outings are double points to win this event it is essential that the winner should participate in the majority of the competitions. This year was no exception. Chris Dunn regained the order of Merit for the 10th time with a total of 642pts, 2nd was Andy Evans with 587pts, and Darren Bailey 3rd with 422pts and Don Davies 4th with 395pts. Andy Evans was the star of the outings but unfortunately his non participation in the Eclectic and Stroke Play Cup put paid to his order of merit challenge for this year. On a very sad note it was announced that the 1970 Captain, John Bigg has died. John was a great supporter of the club and won the Chessington Cup in 1963 and Captains Prize in 1979 amongst lots of other competitions. I know that the members of the OS Golf Club sends sympathy and condolences to the family. Looking forward to 2016 our new Captain is Bob Bailey. We hope you will join was us to give Bob our support and wish him a successful year as Captain. Let's hope all his outings are blessed with fine weather. There were changes in the committee. Phil Blackman as secretary stood down to be replaced by Lee Gladwin-Stride. We would like to thank Phil for all his work. It was also announced that Kevin Jones would stand down as outings organiser and that Lee Gladwin=Stride would take up the reins. OS would like to thank Kevin for all his work over the years. Trevor Coupland came onto the committee. The golf club committee is also looking for members to come forward and be available to take up the reins of vice-Captain and finally captain. It is essential for the long term stability of the club members who has not been captain stand up and be counted. I hope this appeal does not fall on deaf ears. |
